We started after eight from our hotel, came downstairs, and walked about eight minutes to the bus stop. There was a long line, but nobody was pushing anyone. It was a very narrow space, yet people lined up perfectly.
These buses are air-conditioned and comfortable. The ticket to Amalfi town cost $3.50. We didn’t get a seat till Positano. we saw a lot of lemons and Olive trees along the way. After a few kilometers, we drove along the beautiful seacoast.
If we were to do it again, we would wake up and leave right away, because it gets busier later in the day.
After Amalfi, we needed another bus. We waited about 30 minutes and paid $2.50 for that ride. The bus started at 11:15. From our hotel in Sorrento to the starting point of the hike, it took more than 3½ hours. To make the best of it, one should come on a weekday and start early.
The drive is stunning. You don’t go all the way to the last stop—follow the crowd and get down at the top. There’s one cafe there, and they don’t charge for the bathroom, which was a good sign and start! Our bus reached around 12:10. We took a short break and started hiking at 12:30.
Wrote a lot about the hike - another post.
At 3:23, we reached Nocelle. It had been a fun hike, but whoever said it’s downhill was lying—it’s absolutely not downhill! It’s up and down all the way. The view is spectacular, but it’s not an easy climb. I saw people hiking with sticks, and that was definitely a better idea. We made it in about three hours.
To reach Positano, it’s another kilometer—about 1,700 steps down. I had no energy left to go down, so we waited for the bus. We had some nice pizza and took a short walk in Positano before heading back to Sorrento.
In Italy, you buy the bus ticket and then validate it inside, but here the staff were validating tickets beforehand, so it took less time to board. We were lucky to get seats and got back to Sorrento at a decent time.
When I was planning this trip, I had all these dreams—like sitting on the right side on the way to Amalfi and the left side on the way back. Well, things don’t always go as planned! Even if you’re early, there are already so many people in line. On the way to Amalfi, we stood halfway in the bus; on the way back, we got seats—but facing the opposite direction!
We came back to Sorrento and, instead of going straight to the hotel, we decided to explore the main street. Then we checked out the marina where we’d catch the boat to Capri the next morning. It was quiet because it was late—the last boat had already returned—but we got the information that the first ferry to Capri leaves at 7:15.
We were excited to go back to the hotel, sleep early, and hop on the first ferry.
Well, Italy has its own way of slowing you down—the weather looked rainy when we went to bed that night.
The meal @Positano
Gorgeous Sorrento
