Flying back home - Day 10 - Sunday

Like every vacation, this one had amazing memories, some incidents, and a few regrets. I’ll always wish we could have done more. Our trip began with a flight cancellation and ended with a delayed flight and last-minute anxiety about whether we would make it. It turned out we weren’t the only ones; thousands of other passengers in Switzerland were experiencing the same.

We flew back on Father’s Day, leaving early in the morning for Lausanne Station, then taking a train to Geneva. We arrived early enough to grab a nice breakfast. However, our flight had an issue, leading to a last-minute change of plane and gate. We boarded the new flight but were delayed without explanation. When we finally reached Zurich, we had little hope of making our connection.

Upon disembarking, we rushed to the gate/terminal for international flights, only to encounter the longest line I had ever seen at any airport. There was a summit in Zurich that day, and delegations were leaving, causing delays for all flights at Zurich airport. After over an hour's delay, we finally departed as the last passengers to board.

One thing I admired about the Swiss system was its precision and efficiency. Even with a short layover, there’s no need to panic; they know what they’re doing. Through our flight cancellation experience, I learned that in Europe, airlines are obligated to either refund 100% or get you a new flight within a few hours. If your new flight arrives at the destination more than three hours later, you’re eligible for compensation. (Read more about it.)

So, I didn’t panic at all, thinking I might spend Father’s Day in Zurich at the most. The flight back home was relaxing, and I was welcomed by the boys at the airport. I end this Switzerland saga with the hope of making it back again soon to do things I couldn’t this time.

This made my day - perfect Father's Day sight.

Dunkin' in Switzerland :) Who would have thought.

Last Day Saturday Day -9 Yvoire and Gruyère

The last day in Switzerland happened to be our anniversary. We went to the medieval town of Yvoire in France. We took a taxi to Lausanne station, then a train to another border town, followed by a mile walk and a boat ride to Yvoire. I loved sitting on the outside deck of the boat, watching the world go by. This was our first time in France, and again, no passport checking or stamping. Yvoire is a tiny, tourist-friendly town with a totally different vibe. It is filled with artsy stores and wonderful items, but everything was quite expensive. We walked around and enjoyed a dish of fillet perch with amazing French wine.

After lunch, we returned home and then got ready for another wonderful celebration. We went to Gruyère for a fondue dinner and some cheese shopping. This town is famous for its cheese, which is used to make fondue. The drive was awesome, with the sun setting. The restaurant and food were absolutely wonderful. The drive was amazing as well.

Dinner was marvelous, and on the way back, I had my friend stop at Lake Geneva. The sunset was incredible, a perfect conclusion to our trip.

Travel Details:  costing around 16 CHF one way with a half-fare card.

  • Lausanne to Nyon: Around 35 minutes by train.
  • Walk from Station to the Port: About a 20-minute walk.
  • Nyon to Yvoire: A 20-minute boat ride,

This day was a fitting end to our journey, filled with beautiful sights, delicious food, and unforgettable memories.

Day - 8 Friday - Trip from Interlaken to Lausanne via Montreux

Friday was the day to travel back to our base in Lausanne. By this time, we had become pro travelers, but sadly, it was time to wrap up our wonderful trip. When I was planning my trip, I was under the impression that these Panoramic Expresses were very expensive. On the first day when we went to Montreux, I found a counter for the Golden Pass Express and asked many questions. I knew I wanted to come back from Interlaken by this train.

While checking the map, I realized that this beautiful scenic route goes through two towns featured in Bollywood movies. The movie DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge) was shot in Gstaad and Saanen. We decided to get down in Gstaad, put our bags in the station locker (5 CHF for 24 hours, big enough to keep our bags), and explore.

I went to the information center, and before I could finish my question about Bollywood shooting, they handed me a brochure detailing the movies shot in the town. We hung out in the promenade (where Kajol was dancing and running around drunk in DDLJ). We then took the next train and went to Saanen, which was only a 5-minute ride as suggested by the person at the center. We hung out in Saanen, visited the bridge, church, and airport. The town center has a map of shooting locations and many posters around the town.

Instead of taking the train, we decided to walk back to Gstaad 4 KMs. This gave us time to experience the local streets and enjoy a leisurely walk and talk. I went back to the information center to thank them. One of them asked me something, and I explained what Yash Chopra did for Switzerland and Bollywood, and how DDLJ was a lifetime movie for so many of us. I learned more about the town from her. I had to eat at the same bakery; Mr. Husband paid for my pastry and coffee because Rahul didn’t show up there.

It was time to head back home. The Golden Pass Express didn’t disappoint. It is a beautiful ride. The last part in Montreux was the most amazing, with the train coming down like a snake, twisting and turning. From Montreux, we took another train and taxi to home, where our amazing host had a fabulous dinner laid out for our anniversary.

Lesson learned:

  • Panoramic Expresses: They are not as expensive as you might think Bernie express, Glacier express are the expensive ones.
  • Bollywood Connections: If you’re a Bollywood fan, visiting Gstaad and Saanen can be a fun addition to your trip. Check out the information centers for brochures on movie shooting locations.
  • Luggage Lockers: the best thing for stop overs. Most of the stations have it. You need coins though.https://www.sbb.ch/en/travel-information/stations/services-station/lockers/lockers.html
  • Walking: this was one of the best thing we did.

This journey was the perfect end to our amazing trip, filled with scenic beauty, nostalgia, and a fabulous anniversary dinner.
