A gloomy boring Saturday in Boston turned into laughter, giggle, stories and food and non stop chai.
That is the power of saree.
We had our first Boston Saree speak meet in feb 2018. Since then we all found meaningful friendships and it has encouraged and supported us in many ways.
The group grew so our knowledge, love and passion for Sarees. we are just not the saree sakhis, we have become mentor, philosopher and guide to each other in many way. The second anniversary celebration - theme- Pink or red silk.
Winter in Boston restricts us in many ways , dancing in snow in a chiffon Saree is still a dream for many of us. So we decided to take our romance indoor.
We all gathered, ate and chitchatted and talked about Sarees but before that we had to take our pictures. And that was a challenge as it was below zero degree with wind. But we had to take pictures outdoor and on one wanted to have shawl or jacket.
Can you imagine the scene – 13 women in Saree rushed in and out of the house , took pictures and rushed back in to heat up, kept drinking chai, walked outside again for single pictures. And the repeat cycle.
The introduction was the most fun part for me. You think you know people and then they bring something new when you talk in detail.
In that room we had stories of sarees associated with kids, parents, travel, work, society, love and much more.
I hope we continue to meet and inspire, encourage each other.
This Kanchi Silk Cotton has a wonderful story. I bought it from Kanchi in 2015 Winter.
On March 31st in 2016 Javed Akhtar and Shabana Aazmi came to Boston for "Kaifi and I"
That day I wore this Saree, Listening to Jaswindar Singh, singing Jagjit Singh's ghazals, written by Kaifi Aazmi. That one evening, many of us poetry lovers were in that one place, sitting together forgetting our existence.
The Saree meet was on Feb 8th, ghazal Mastroe Bday. Hopeless lover in me couldn't think of anything else but this saree.
This Saturday I drove an hour listening to the boss, soaked in love for the man and the poetry.
The Saree is a reminder -
इक ज़रा हाथ बढ़ा दे तो, पकड़ लें दामन
उस के सीने में समा जाए, हमारी धड़कन
इतनी कुर्बत है तो फिर फ़ासला इतना क्यों है -
a deadly combination of Jagjit Singh and Kaifi Aazmi.
