मुझ से तुम जुदा सही, दिल से तो जुदा नहीं - a Bday celebration of the man who defines the love for me

This year Jagjit Singh’s Bday turned into a special day. if you know me then i dont have to tell you that for me everyday is JS day for years.  Its like part of me  while cooking, cleaning, driving, working I feel wrapped in his beautiful voice. I celebrated him everyday for years. But for his Bday I did post something on Facebook, change my profile picture and share some music with some friends.

Year 2020 added and subtracted many people in our life, as they say - you win some, you lose some. I hope I will be able to talk about my loss some day but today its about adding some happiness and friendship and realizing what is important to hold on to and wise to let go.

Our life changed overnight, people who are around us, were so far all of a sudden.  Felt like doors were shut without notice. All of sudden I was home with 3 men 24/7. We knew nothing and uncertainty wasn’t that scary in the beginning but slowly things started to unfold and we adjusted our expectation and life style. I loved having everyone home but was missing my space. it took time for all of us to get into routine and find a balance. Summer brought brightness and longer days, time in hand, clarity in mind, sunshine and hope. This was the time I added some more poetry and ghazals to my life. Met people who live and breathe Jagjit Singh like me.

This Bday some of those fans decided to meet in a place in Lonavala. Imagine spending two days with people who share your passion and craziness. forgetting about world, work, job, life, responsibilities, covid and everything else which is called “worldly” and immerse yourself in just your passion.

I couldn’t be there in person but thats what this pandemic taught us - that video calls is one of the best invention for this time. Zoom and FaceTime are our best tools and what’s app is our life line.

That Sunday it snowed in Boston but It wasn’t cold and my man agreed to be in picture. his long hair is one of the “Covid gain” I had to have a pic with him before he decides to get rid of those “zulfen”(hair)

The saree was bought in Amritsar Summer 2017. I went to Amritsar as it was on ma papa’s bucket list, A trip I also shared with my older son. They bought many fulkari Dupattas for my sisters and some for gifts, I on the other hand wanted a saree. Amongst all those bright colors this saree  caught my eyes. A fulkari, just for my most beloved man from Punjab.

What is love for you? for me today’s it’s one his ghazal.

He was willing to be in pic and smiling. It was another version of love for me that day. Ashish's style  love - to keep his woman happy he agreed to do this bollywood thing.

And then on the other side of the world they were celebrating  a person who gave our emotions and feeling a voice. I so wish I was part of these pictures.

Mainu tera shabaab le baitha/

I dont understand Panjabi ( a regional language in India) but sometime you dont need to understand the language, the emotions make into your heart,

for last couple of days, Jagjit Singh’s this ghazal is stuck in my mind. I dont know but it has made me feel loved and rejected at the same time, reminded me of good times and bad times,  made me experience hope and despair. Its like I have been stuck in a circle of high and low. So conveniently I can blame this whole mental fatigue to Covid Era. I can tell myself that everyone is in the same situation and soon it will be all over and things will be fine. Only if I could convince my heart and soul the same story.

So what do you do? listen to the same song multiple time and soon you realize you actually remember the words and understand it more than you thought. and then you make the phone call to people who understand you craziness for the man.

Today i did talk to two people who love Jagjit Singh in their own way, who had stories to share, talk about his bigger than anything personality. and yes I did feel much better.

I wrote an article many years ago about my passion for his ghazals and another after his death. even after almost 9 yrs the feeling of loss is still raw. Strangely his ghazals reminds the emptiness all over again. Today one of a dear friend said grieving is so important to move on. So thinking of writing what the loss means to me. A dear friend asked me to write Part -2 of that article and come to think of it, he has a point. I always said his ghazals gave meaning to so many emotions. I should write how his ghazals made me experience some emotions. Over the years I met some amazing people who share the same craziness and someone of them can claim the special place in my life.

Jagjit Singh sang some of Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s writing.

Saree Meet Boston. Feb 8th

A gloomy boring Saturday in Boston turned into laughter, giggle, stories and food and non stop chai.
That is the power of saree.
We had our first Boston Saree speak meet in feb 2018. Since then we all found meaningful friendships and it has encouraged and supported us in many ways.
The group grew so our knowledge, love and passion for Sarees. we are just not the saree sakhis, we have become mentor, philosopher and guide to each other in many way. The second anniversary celebration - theme- Pink or red silk.
Winter in Boston restricts us in many ways , dancing in snow in a chiffon Saree is still a dream for many of us. So we decided to take our romance indoor.
We all gathered, ate and chitchatted and talked about Sarees but before that we had to take our pictures. And that was a challenge as it was below zero degree with wind. But we had to take pictures outdoor and on one wanted to have shawl or jacket.
Can you imagine the scene – 13 women in Saree rushed in and out of the house , took pictures and rushed back in to heat up, kept drinking chai, walked outside again for single pictures. And the repeat cycle.
The introduction was the most fun part for me. You think you know people and then they bring something new when you talk in detail.
In that room we had stories of sarees associated with kids, parents, travel, work, society, love and much more.
I hope we continue to meet and inspire, encourage each other.

This Kanchi Silk Cotton has a wonderful story. I bought it from Kanchi in 2015 Winter.
On March 31st in 2016 Javed Akhtar and Shabana Aazmi came to Boston for "Kaifi and I"
That day I wore this Saree, Listening to Jaswindar Singh, singing Jagjit Singh's ghazals, written by Kaifi Aazmi. That one evening, many of us poetry lovers were in that one place, sitting together forgetting our existence.
The Saree meet was on Feb 8th, ghazal Mastroe Bday. Hopeless lover in me couldn't think of anything else but this saree.
This Saturday I drove an hour listening to the boss, soaked in love for the man and the poetry.
The Saree is a reminder -

a deadly combination of Jagjit Singh and Kaifi Aazmi.
